SOUND DESIGN

The sound design needed to connect generations without smoothing away the instability of memory.

Mary's Daughters is a play by Kaya Bucholc, written in collaboration with Will Wallace, produced by BiLLO Studio and Little Lion Theatre Company at The Space in London in 2024.

Robert led the sound design. The production's movement between generations created room for sound to do more than mark location or transition: layered voices, altered memory and original music could become part of how the audience experiences time and inheritance.

The design uses those materials as a connected language. Voice can feel immediate in one moment and unstable in the next; music can carry emotional continuity where the narrative crosses between people and periods; transitions can change the audience's sense of where they are before the next scene has fully arrived.

The approach reflects Robert's wider theatre practice: begin with the dramatic function, establish a precise sonic vocabulary, then make that vocabulary playable and repeatable inside the practical system of the production.

01 / THE WORK

Build continuity without making memory neat.

VOICE

Layer speech and sonic perspective so memory can feel present, distant or unstable.

MUSIC

Use original music to carry emotional connections across changing generations and scenes.

TRANSITION

Let sound move the audience between periods and states before the stage picture has fully changed.

What should sound carry between scenes?

If the production is dealing with memory, time, voice or shifting perspective, Robert can help define a sound language that belongs to the storytelling.
